Lash extensions should never be treated as a one-style-fits-all service.

Two clients may request exactly the same photograph but have completely different eye shapes, natural lash density, growth patterns and lifestyles. Applying the same lengths, curls and volume to both clients is unlikely to produce the same result and may not be appropriate for their natural lashes.

The aim is not simply to make the lashes look fuller. It is to create a style that complements your features, feels comfortable and can be worn without placing unnecessary strain on your natural lashes.

What are bespoke lash extensions?

Bespoke lash extensions are individually designed around your:

• Eye shape and brow arch

• Eyelid shape and space

During your consultation, your lash artist will discuss the result you want and assess whether it is suitable for your natural lashes. The curl, length, thickness and placement of the extensions can then be adjusted across different areas of the eye. This customised placement is commonly known as lash mapping.

Why copying a photograph does not always work

Reference photographs are helpful because they show your lash artist the overall finish you like. However, the exact set shown in a photograph may have been created for someone with a very different eye shape or natural lash line.

For example, a long cat-eye map may look lifted on one person but make another person's eyes appear more downturned. A very strong curl may open one eye shape beautifully but sit too far away from the lash line on another.

The density of the model's natural lashes also affects the final result. Someone with a naturally full lash line can achieve a darker set using less volume than someone with sparse natural lashes.

We therefore use inspiration photographs as a starting point rather than a template that must be copied exactly.

How eye shape affects lash styling

The position of the longest extensions can visibly change the appearance of the eyes.

Almond eyes

Almond eyes suit many different lash maps because their proportions are naturally balanced. A soft sweep, wispy map or carefully styled cat eye can enhance their shape without making the outer corners appear heavy.

Round eyes

Placing too much length through the centre can make round eyes appear even rounder. A gradual increase in length towards the outer half can create a more elongated appearance.

Hooded eyes

Hooded eyes often benefit from curls that lift the extensions beyond the fold of the eyelid. Specialist curls such as L and M curls can create visible lift while keeping the base of the extension close to the natural lash.

Downturned eyes

Very long or heavy extensions at the extreme outer corners can exaggerate a downward angle. A more lifted map, with the longest point positioned slightly before the outer corner, can create a more balanced result.

Close-set eyes

Keeping the inner corners light and gradually increasing definition towards the middle and outer sections can make close-set eyes appear more balanced.

Wide-set eyes

Adding emphasis through the centre and avoiding excessive outer-corner length can help bring visual focus towards the middle of the face.

These are general principles rather than rigid rules. Your facial structure, brows and personal preferences must also be considered.

Why natural lash health should determine the set

Every natural lash has a limit to the amount of weight it can comfortably support.

A healthy, mature natural lash may be capable of holding a longer extension or a lightweight volume fan. A short, fine or newly growing lash will usually require something lighter.

This means that not every natural lash should receive exactly the same extension.

A responsible lash artist will adjust the weight throughout the lash line and may leave very fine or immature lashes unlashed when necessary.

Applying extensions that are too long or heavy can place unnecessary tension on the natural lashes. Over time, repeated unsuitable application may contribute to twisting, breakage or premature shedding. This is why the health and strength of the natural lashes must take priority over creating the darkest possible set.

Why we do not recommend Mega Volume for every client

Mega Volume can create a beautiful, dark and dramatic finish, but it is not automatically the best choice for everyone.

Suitability depends on:

• The thickness and condition of the natural lashes

• The diameter of the extensions used

• The size and construction of each fan

• The length selected

• The client's maintenance habits

• How regularly the client attends infill appointments

  
  

Mega Volume fans must be created using extremely fine lash fibres and carefully controlled weights. More extensions within a fan should not simply mean more weight.

For some clients, a carefully designed Russian Volume, Wet Look or Hybrid set can produce strong definition with less density. This may create a more flattering result while being easier to maintain.

Where Mega Volume is not suitable, we will explain why and recommend an alternative rather than applying a set that could compromise the natural lashes.

Bigger and longer do not always mean better

Long extensions are not necessarily more flattering. Excessive length can:

• Hide the eyelid

• Make the eyes appear smaller

• Overpower delicate facial features

• Cause the outer corners to droop visually

• Become difficult to maintain

• Add unnecessary leverage to the natural lash

Shorter extensions can often create a darker, neater lash line because they sit closer together and retain their shape more effectively. A well-designed shorter set may therefore look fuller and more polished than a set created using maximum length.

Classic, Hybrid, Wet Look or Volume?

The correct treatment depends on both the finish you want and the natural lashes available.

Classic lashes

Classic extensions use one extension on each suitable natural lash. They are ideal for clients who want subtle length and definition. The final fullness is limited by the number of natural lashes you have, so Classic sets may appear lighter on sparse lash lines.

Hybrid lashes

Hybrid sets combine individual Classic extensions with lightweight Volume fans. They offer more texture and fullness while retaining a relatively soft finish.

Wet Look lashes

Wet Look sets use narrow, closed-tip fans to create defined sections and a glossy, mascara-style appearance. They are suitable for clients who want noticeable definition without a very fluffy finish.

Russian Volume

Russian Volume uses handmade fans of fine extensions to create greater fullness. The number and weight of lashes used within each fan should be adjusted according to the strength of the individual natural lash.

Mega Volume

Mega Volume produces the darkest and fullest result. It requires advanced fan construction, very fine extension diameters and careful assessment of the natural lashes.

The name of the treatment is only one part of the design. Any of these techniques can be customised using different curls, lengths and maps.

Bespoke lashes should suit your lifestyle too

The most visually dramatic style is not always the most practical style. Someone who wears minimal makeup and works in a conservative professional environment may prefer soft definition. Someone preparing for a wedding, event or photoshoot may want a more noticeable result. Your routine also matters.

For example, clients who sleep on their side, exercise frequently, regularly use steam rooms or wear substantial eye makeup may experience different retention from someone with a less active routine. A realistic consultation allows your lash artist to recommend a finish that you will be able to maintain between appointments.

Why infill appointments protect lash health

Lash extensions grow out with the natural lashes to which they are attached.

As the attachment point moves further away from the eyelid, the extension can begin to twist or place additional weight on the natural lash. During an infill appointment, grown-out extensions are carefully removed and replaced closer to the base.

Infills are therefore not only about restoring fullness.

They also allow the technician to:

• Remove grown-out extensions

• Check the condition of the natural lashes

• Adjust the styling where necessary

• Replace extensions that have shed

Most clients attend infill appointments approximately every two to three weeks, although the ideal timing varies according to the natural lash cycle and retention.

What healthy application should look and feel like

Correctly applied lash extensions should feel lightweight and comfortable. Each extension or fan should be attached to one isolated natural lash. Several natural lashes should not be stuck together, as each lash needs to grow and shed independently.

The extensions should also be positioned a small distance away from the skin rather than being glued directly to the eyelid. After the appointment, you should not experience ongoing pulling, pinching or a heavy sensation when blinking. Minor sensitivity can occur for different reasons, but persistent pain, swelling or significant irritation should not be ignored. Contact your lash technician promptly if you experience an unusual reaction.

How to maintain healthy lashes between appointments

Good aftercare helps protect both the extensions and the natural lashes underneath.

We recommend that clients:

• Clean their lash extensions regularly using a suitable oil-free lash cleanser/shampoo

• Avoid pulling, picking or rubbing the extensions

• Brush the lashes gently with a clean spoolie

• Avoid applying mascara to the extensions

• Keep heavy oil-based products away from the lash line

• Attend regular infill appointments

• Arrange professional removal rather than pulling the extensions off at home

  
  

Keeping extensions clean is particularly important. Avoiding water for long periods does not improve retention and can allow makeup, oils and debris to accumulate around the lash line.

Signs that your lash set may be too heavy

Speak to your lash artist if:

• The extensions repeatedly twist or turn

• Your natural lashes appear shorter or weaker over time

• The set feels heavy or uncomfortable

• You can see several natural lashes stuck together

• The extensions are attached to the eyelid

• You experience persistent pulling or pinching

Natural lashes shed as part of their normal growth cycle, so seeing an extension attached to a single shed natural lash is not automatically a sign of damage.

The concern is repeated breakage, discomfort or unsuitable application.
